The week of 15 – 23 September is PADI Aware Week. This is a global initiative that encourages everyone in the scuba diving industry to do their share for ocean conservation. From offering special AWARE Week specialty courses to conducting Dive Against Debris cleanup dives, people are making every dive count.
Costa Rica plays host to Humpback whales for 8 months of the year. To take advantage of this, we are offering whale eco-tours during AWARE Week. These tours are whale watching tours with a conservation spin.
What to expect
Our whale tours adhere to laws set out by UNESCO, the Keto Foundation and SINAC. This means we maintain a safe distance and conduct tours in the most non-invasive way possible. In addition to this, our knowledgeable guides provide educational talks on whale behaviour and physiology while on the boat.
Tours start with a brief presentation at our shop in the Marina, after which we head out for 2.5 hours on the boat. There are refreshments on the boat and guests can also swim in the water once we are away from the whales. Please note that swimming with whales or dolphins is not permitted.
We are also collecting data during the tours which is used in a study being done by the International Maritime University of Panama. This study seeks to document whale population patterns and trends.
Our next tours run on 22 and 23 September and we invite all members of the public to join us. Come and take advantage of the opportunity to become a citizen scientist!
